There is some sort of odd direct light happening. This isn't the worst in the world, but not nearly as flattering as a side lit image or even a bounce flash.
I love how they are so in focus and then everything else is blurry. They also fill the frame nicely, the background does not look distracting. It looks sort of like a flash was used.
